What an amazing looking bird the Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill is. Very funky I think. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen was an interchange between one of these birds and a Dwarf Mongoose. It was part of a live safari stream on YouTube (SafariLive). The Mongoose kept playing dead every time that the Hornbill looked at it.
For me this is a really important painting as it was a bit of a lightbulb moment in terms of my art. I worked on a small canvas with big brushes and worked hard to keep the details minimal. I was so pleased with what I was able to achieve and it was a terrific learning experience.
